Thelonious Monk: The Complete Riverside Recordings is a comprehensive compilation of the recordings made by Thelonious Monk for Riverside Records between 21 July 1955 and 21 April 1961. It was released by Riverside in 1986 on 22 LPs or on 15 CDs. It contains all the tracks previously released both on the original and on the later expanded CD versions of all his Riverside albums, together with some tracks never previously released. It Don't Mean A Thing (If It Ain't Got That Swing)" – 4:39.

Anyone curious about Thelonious Monk would be very interested in aquiring this 1952-1954 Prestige box set. For one thing, this is his complete recordings for Prestige already put together and digitally remastered with great new liner notes about the recording sessions for each album. I have never been this happy and pleased with a box set since I bought Bill Evans - "The Complete Village Vanguard Recordings, 1961.

Thelonious Monk was only with Prestige from 1952-1954, which explains why Fantasy's The Complete Prestige Recordings contains only three CDs. But Monk's Prestige output is noteworthy and generally rewarding, if imperfect at times. Not everything on The Complete Prestige Recordings is essential, but for the serious Monk collector, its rewards are great. The set gets off to an interesting start with four 1944 recordings from a Coleman Hawkins session

The first Thelonious Monk Prestige session happened two months later, on 15 October 1952, a few days following the pianist’s 35th birthday, at studio boffin/engineer Rudy Van Gelder’s Hackensack studio in New Jersey. The legacy of Thelonious Monk’s Prestige recordings. After his three-year tenure with Prestige, Monk moved on to the enjoy long and fruitful stints at first Riverside and then, in the early 60s, Columbia. But as The Complete Prestige 10 LP Collection demonstrates, Monk’s sides for Bob Weinstock’s company represented significant early steps in his career and cemented his place as an important and original voice in jazz.

Thelonious Monk’s prestige work falls somewhere between ‘must have’ and just want. Monk’s recording career falls into four stages: His Blue Note years (1947-1952), Prestige years (1952-1954), Riverside years (1955-1961), and Columbia years (1962-1968). Beside a few live dates for the very small Vogue, Black Lion, and DIW labels, these four labels cover his entire career. Funny, because Monk’s sound in 1968 wasn’t significantly different from his first recordings for Blue Note in 1947
