Mussorgsky lent to the exhibition the two pictures Hartmann had given him, and viewed the show in person. Later in June, two-thirds of the way through composing his song cycle, Sunless, Mussorgsky was inspired to compose Pictures at an Exhibition, quickly completing the score in three weeks (2–22 June 1874). Another arrangement appeared when Eugene Ormandy took over the Philadelphia Orchestra in 1936 following Leopold Stokowski's decision to resign the conductorship. Re-issues of the HIStory album further changed the sample on the track.

Pictures at an Exhibition was inspired by paintings by a friend of his. The variety of pieces within the set as well as the beauty of each is adequate reason for its continued popularity. The final picture, Great Gate of Kiev, is probably the most popular and is thrilling to hear. It is one of the principal ways that I evaluate a performance. Of course, Ormandy's Philadelphia Orchestra was a finely honed instrument. They play like the world-class orchestra they were - precise, together, and sonorous. Despite his occasional drug abuse and the alcoholism that killed him at 42 years of age, Mussorgsky was a remarkable but not prolific composer. I would encourage those who have not heard his original version for piano to get one. As to the orchestrated version by Ravel, this disc is one to be played again and again.
