DAVE CATNEY is a hard bop post bop music artist. He was the son of Paul and Delores Catney. While several of his compositions made it into television and film, Dave Catney is best remembered for his promotion of the Houston jazz scene and arranging entertainment for various nightclubs. Catney moved to Houston with his family at the age of five. He became interested in piano the following year after his family gave him a homemade xylophone.

It was a sad day for jazz when AIDS claimed Dave Catney's life on August 11, 1994. The Houston-based pianist was only in his early thirties, and he showed a great deal of promise on the three albums he recorded for the Houston-based Justice label in the early '90s. Released by Justice in 1990, First Flight was, as its title indicates, Catney's first album as a leader

Catney also wrote music and several of his originals made their way to such films as And the Band Played On, as well as television. He also ran a popular jazz nightclub in Houston, called Cezanne. Signing with Justice Records in Houston in 1990, he recorded three CDs before dying from AIDS in 1994. He also contributed an original track with vocalist Sandra Dudley to Last Night When We Were Young: The Ballad Album, an AIDS education benefit CD produced by pianist Fred Hersch.
