The Violin Concerto from 2005 was recorded in London's Barbican Centre in April 2007 and features the composer conducting soloist and dedicatee Anthony Marwood and the Chamber Orchestra of Europe. Nimble, quicksilver and occasionally unstable outer movements orbit a saturnine centre which seethes and surges in clashing, overlapping cycles while slowly spinning off the centre of its sinewy axis. From the same concert, the Three Studies from Couperin (2006) map keyboard pieces with improvisatory glee, each employing the same harmonies and rhythms as its original within an identical timeframe. They prompt a buoyant, dancing lightness of touch from the COE that is wholly appropriate.

Then comes "Three Studies from Couperin", a cute enough piece that's a little reminiscent of Stravinsky's treatment of Pergolesi. Many modern composers (Wuorinen comes to mind) have written pieces like this as refreshers. There is finally a piece-quite nicely performed by the Youth Orchestra of Great Britain-of a suite derived from Ades' opera "Powder her Face". Actually it sounds more like it was derived from Gershwin, with a strong dose of Michael Giacchino's film music.

Thomas Adès: Tevot and Violin Concerto, Three Studies from Couperin, Dances from Powder Her Face. Berlin Philharmonic Conducted by Simon Rattle (EMI). If there's a young composer around producing better music than 39-year-old Adès, I haven't been lucky enough to hear it. Headlined by a piece commissioned specially for the Berlin Philharmonic, this collection shows how phenomenally versatile Adès is. Tevot is an epic, intensely moody piece that feels like the soundtrack to a crippled spaceship's voyage through unknown regions, while Adès's orchestral versions of themes from.

Violin Concerto "Concentric Paths" (2005). 3 Studies from Couperin (2006). Overture, Waltz, and Finale from Powder Her Face (2007). Berliner Philharmoniker/Sir Simon Rattle; Anthony Marwood (violin); Chamber Orchestra of Europe/Thomas Adès; National Youth Orchestra of Great Britain/Paul Daniel. I might as well get it out right away that I consider Tevot and the violin concerto almost as good as music gets. On the other hand, the Couperin Studies and the Powder Her Face dances, though well-made, merely take up time you could use to do something useful, like watching water come to a boil. Annotator Tom Service praises Adès's Couperin orchestrations, but to me it sounds like Couperin through a bad head cold. The full opera Powder Her Face - with a libretto that disgusted me - didn't have enough interesting music in it to fill a mite's pupik.
