John Silver or Long John Silver is a fictional character and the main antagonist in the novel Treasure Island (1883) by Robert Louis Stevenson. The most colourful and complex character in the book, he continues to appear in popular culture. His one-leggedness and parrot, in particular, have greatly contributed to the image of the pirate in popular culture.
Long John Silver is a quartermaster, which means he handles the ship's food and drink during the voyage. That's also why his fellow pirates call him Barbecue. He's apparently the only man whom the legendary pirate Captain Flint was afraid of ("Flint his own self was feared of me" (1. 3))
Long John Silver is the book's most powerful and developed character, one whose motivation is believable but not unambiguous and whose complexity makes Treasure. He wants the freedom and luxury to live his old age openly and happily, and the peculiar set of experiences that his life so far has brought him allows him to commit the darkest crimes to gain these things. Note that in the 1934 film, it is Jim, not Ben Gunn, who helps Silver to escape, but Stevenson's Jim cannot be so self-contradictory; his morality, like the others', is conventional, black and white. Silver is amoral, or perhaps he is true to his own strange morality. Ultimately, it is Stevenson himself who allows Silver to escape, sending the others ashore and giving him leave
A non-Disney LONG JOHN SILVER (Treasure Island Pty, Lt. Distributors Corporation of America, 1954) from an Australian company followed. The same company hatched the idea of TV and THE ADVENTURES OF LONG JOHN SILVER was born in 1955. Like all other adaptations to the small screen and ½ hour weekly series format, LONG JOHN underwent somewhat of a metamorphosis. The downsizing of length and the slashing of budget rendered of necessity a new, episodic & continued story, though by no means a serialized 'Cliff Hanger'. The former Pirate became a sort of Crusading Trouble Shooter.
