My family and other animals. It is a melancholy of mine own, compounded of many simples, extracted from many objects, and indeed the sundry contemplation of my travels, which, by often rumination, wraps me in a most humorous sadness. As You Like It. The Speech for the Defence. THIS is the story of a five-year sojourn that I and my family made on the Greek island of Corfu. It was only with the greatest difficulty, and by exercising considerable cunning, that I managed to retain a few pages here and there which I could devote exclusively to animals.

My Family and Other Animals (1956) is an autobiographical work by British naturalist Gerald Durrell. It tells of the years that he lived as a child with his siblings and widowed mother on the Greek island of Corfu between 1935 and 1939. It describes the life of the Durrell family in a humorous manner, and explores the fauna of the island. It is the first and most well-known of Durrell's 'Corfu trilogy,' together with Birds, Beasts, and Relatives (1969) and The Garden of the Gods (1978).

The family moved to London not long before Gerald Durrell's father died. After his death, Mrs. Durrell moved Gerald, his sister Margo, and brother Leslie to the Greek island of Corfu to join her eldest son, Lawrence (Larry in the novel), who already lived there with his wife. Though My Family and Other Animals is l and many of the characters were real people, it does leave out important facts (such as Larry's marriage and the fact that Theodore Stephanides was also married with a daughter, whom the families hoped would actually marry Gerald)

Many of the anecdotes capture the most interesting of the familys encounters with the island and its inhabitants but the main theme is of two intertwined worlds; that of animals and wildlife, with that of people. Because of Gerry and his extreme love of nature, many of his pets and family members meet frequently, resulting in chaotic situations

When the Durrell family can no longer endure the damp, gray English climate, they do what any sensible family would do: sell their house and relocate to the sun-soaked Greek island of Corfu. Through glorious silver-and-green olive groves and across brilliant tusk-white beaches, ten-year-old Gerry, the youngest of the four Durrell children, pursues his interest in natural history with a joyful passion, revealing the engrossing hidden world of the island's fauna.

Author: Gerald Durrell. When the unconventional Durrell family can no longer endure the damp, gray English climate, they do what any sensible family would do: sell their house and relocate to the sunny Greek isle of Corfu.

Gerald takes items related to natural history, and his family watches with anticipation as they finally set foot on the island. At the hotel, they make plans to spend the day house hunting, but they are not successful. Mrs. Durrell puts a stop to Gerald’s unhindered excursions when she hires a tutor, George. George is a polymath, but he recognizes that Gerald’s love of bugs and animals cannot be stopped. He decides to integrate zoology into their daily lessons. Meanwhile, Larry has decided to invite friends to stay on the island, and when Mrs. Durrell protests that there is not enough space, he talks her into moving again. This time the villa is yellow, and with the increase in space, Larry’s friends begin to arrive. They are wild, creative, and completely over Mrs. Durrell’s head.
