Eugen d'Albert's "Tiefland" is something of an oddity in the operatic repertoire. First performed in 1903, it embraced the then-current vogue for verismo, with its plot built around the life of peasant Pedro who is tricked into marrying Marta, the mistress of wealthy landowner Sebastiano. Pedro and Marta eventually fall in love, and when Sebastiano tries to humiliate her in front of her husband, Pedro strangles him. The lovers then flee into the mountains to finally live a happy life together.
Heinz Hoppe (tenor), HanneLore Kuhse (soprano), Ernst Gutstein (baritone), Theo Adam (bass), Chor der Staatsoper Dresden & Staatskapelle Dresden, Paul Schmitz. A gem from the vaults of the East-German archives: the opera Tiefland by D’Albert. Eugen d’Albert was a pupil and protégé of Franz Liszt, he embarked on a successful career as a piano virtuoso. As a composer he was deeply rooted in the German culture, and fell under the spell of Richard Wagner. As a conductor he was Kapellmeister in Weimar.
