It marked the second contribution from Bowie to a film based on a Raymond Briggs book – he contributed a filmed introduction to The Snowman in 1982. Bowie's song was the result of a collaboration with t Erdal Kızılçay, who would work with Bowie in the future, most notably on The Buddha of Suburbia. The single peaked at UK No. 44, promoted by a video that featured a montage of clips from the film, with Bowie's animated face overlaid. The music is dense, complex, structured as a one-act play in the context of the album. It and David Bowie's title song are the best points of this album - the Genesis contribution is ho-hum, Squeeze boring, and Hugh Cornwell dreadful.
When The Wind Blows by David Bowie. Don't be down, it's all in the past. Though you may be afraid. So long child, it's awful dark. And I've never felt the sun. Life burns a savage wound, angry and wrought. Trusting a twisted word, you'll run, run away. You'll take him on home, you'll spin and taunt him. But they won't believe you, no matter what you'll say. So long.
