For What It's Worth (Stop, Hey What's That Sound)" (often referred to as simply "For What It's Worth") is a song written by Stephen Stills. Performed by Buffalo Springfield, it was recorded on December 5, 1966; released as a single on Atco Records on December 23, 1966; and peaked at No. 7 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. It was later added to the March 1967 second pressing of their first album, Buffalo Springfield. The title was added after the song was written, and does not appear in the lyrics.

For What It’s Worth Lyrics. There's something happening here But what it is ain't exactly clear There's a man with a gun over there Telling me I got to beware. Recorded by Buffalo Springfield as a single, it was eventually released in 1967 on their self-titled album. Buffalo Springfield was the house band for LA’s famous Whiskey A Go Go during the time of the riots, which led Stephen Stills to pen the song. Much has been written about the song; one of the best sources of information is Reason to Rock. What have the artists said about the song?

Buffalo Springfield was the band's first album, and this song was not originally included on it. After "For What It's Worth" became a hit single, it replaced "Baby Don't Scold Me" on re-issues of the album. Notable when you consider this song's success, the group quietly recorded this without involving their producers Charles Greene and Brian Stone, with whom they had had immense dissatisfaction about the recording of their album up until then

For What It’s Worth has transcended its origin story to become one of pop’s most-covered protest songs – a sort of We Shall Overcome of its time, its references to police, guns and paranoia remaining continually relevant. The Staple Singers were among the first to cover it, in 1967, but since then, it’s been recorded by a mind-bendingly diverse number of acts: Ozzy Osbourne turned it into a grim stomper, Lucinda Williams into a ghostly ballad, Kid Rock into a classic-rock homage, Rush into a swirling soundscape, Led Zeppelin (in live bootlegs) into languid blues

For What It’s Worth was almost immediately embraced as an anthem for much larger social and political protests. It’s difficult to imagine that Stills would have made that type of impact as a member of the Monkees. The song was ripe for new interpretations because of its simplicity. It's so vague that it can almost mean anything. Buffalo Springfield didn't stay together for long, but their impact on rock history is still felt today, as several of its members went on to long and highly successful careers. By 1970, Stephens Stills had joined David Crosby of The Byrds and Graham Nash of The Hollies (and sometimes Neil Young) in a folk rock supergroup. Stills has been inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame twice: once for Buffalo Springfield, and once for CS&N. Young has also been inducted twice, the first time being for his solo work.
